EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE: This program is Performance Based in Outcomes for Clinical EKG Technician Training as approved by the National Health Career Association. At the completion of this course, each student will be eligible to challenge the National certification exam as a Certified EKG Technician. In order to become nationally certified as an EKG Technician, students will be able to achieve a minimal passing score of 70% or better on the certification exam and prove competency performing an electrocardiogram with basic evaluation for screening. In our training environment, students will be able to acquire satisfactory skills and demonstrate competency in EKG procedures which encompass both clinical and laboratory administrative activities. Upon successful completion of all certificate program course requirements, including the externship, graduates will be eligible for entry level EKG Technician employment positions in a variety of health care facilities.
CURRICULUM GOAL: The curricular program goal is to provide an educational background in which students can acquire satisfactory skills and demonstrate clinical competency in EKG procedures as well as providing guidance so that the student may obtain a position as a Certified EKG Technician. Among many other performance based skills, the curriculum teaches students how to demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the Cardiovascular System; demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology related to EKG; be able to identify the phases of the cardiac cycle; demonstrate basic understanding of EKG interpretations; demonstrate the ability to recognize normal and abnormal EKG’s; become familiar with different ECG equipment; be able to properly set up ECG equipment; learn proper identification techniques of the patient; learn how to introduce him or herself in a professional manner; be familiar with the Patient’s Bill of Rights; list the important information that must be included on the ECG report; demonstrate basic understanding of cardiac disorders and emergencies; have a basic understanding of the pharmacology of drugs commonly used in the treatment of cardiac disorders; demonstrate proficiency in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation; demonstrate proficiency in Electrocardiography (ECG’s); and demonstrate understanding of the theory of EKG by scoring a minimum of 70% on the National Certification written exam.
Prior to graduation the student will be eligible to challenge the National Health career Association’s certification exam, “Certified EKG Technician, CET”. Upon graduation and initial employment, the EKG Technician will be able to demonstrate entry level competencies in the above areas of professional practice.
TOTAL HOURS: This program consists of 90 hours of didactic, laboratory and clinical instruction. The program includes an 18 hour externship. The daytime program requires approximately 3 weeks to complete. The evening program requires 5 weeks to complete. Students attending both day and evening programs are considered full time. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will receive a certificate of completion from Intelli-Healthcare Solutions.
